Artwork: Treo of Trees, Callie Hirsch

About a year ago, Tom Theuns from a band by the name of Aurelia emailed me to ask if he could use one of my paintings, Treo of Trees, for his CD art.  I said sure!  Just give me credit and list my website.  I figured that it would give me some nice exposure and help out muscians in need of colorful art!  I received this in the mail today, direct from Belgium.  How exciting it is to see your art as part of another artform.

The Giant Octopus, Spain

This photo was taken at an aquarium in La Coruna, Spain.  They had this amazing tank outside with maybe six giant octopuses swooshing around.  I could have stayed there forever, in awe of their every movement.  My travel mates, not so much, they were anxious to move on.  We had much to see, land to travel across.

More photos from this octopus series can be seen on my site

We started in La Coruna and traveled North to San Sebastian, land of many tapas "pintxos"bars.  Located in Spanish Basque Country.  Simply a delicious place to unwind and make new discoveries.

To view more photos of this fantastical journey.

Traveling is so very different from my 9-5 work life.  It is incredibly wonderful to have the opportunity to get away and explore how others live, experience the many different cultures, and learn to depend on yourself and others for survival.

Flat Files, Pierogi Gallery in Williamsburg Brooklyn

Flat Files inclusion at Pierogi Gallery 2000 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is a great honor.  The files are curated by the owner Joe Amrhein.  He also recently opened another gallery down the street called The Boiler.  They  have ten art pieces of mine in the files.

What are flat files in a gallery you may ask?  People do ask this.  Art can not be up on the walls all the time, so they keep smaller pieces in a flat file system that anyone can come in and view.  You simply ask them to show you the file of an artist that they represent, and they will bring out there work for you to go through.  You then put on white gloves, hopefully, and get to thumb through the actual artwork available for purchase.  So go visit Peierogi and ask to see the file of: Callie Hirsch.

While in Williamsburg also visit the Artists & Fleas, a fantasticly artistic fleamarket.

Back to Creating Textiles

Squid Scarf, 2012

How does a designer get picked up by a textile company, like, say Hermes?!  Ok, I am reaching high, but I would love to design organic images for there products.  I have been to there stores, in both NYC and London.  I think I have an understanding of what they are about, the quality and prestige they present.

But whom do you send your portfolio to?  I know there are shows in NYC where buyers come to see designers work, but are there other ways? What other companies use freelance designers?  Anyone out there with experience doing this and an understanding of how it works?  Please, share.

A is for Australia

Sound of the Didgeridoo

A continent infused with 30,000 years of history, a mysterious land of inhospitable landscapes and deadly creatures roaming by the thousands. It is the only place with kangaroos, the koala and most other marsupials of the world. Australia has both of the world's monotremes (egg-laying mammals), the platypus and the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and the long-beaked echidna (Zaglossus bruijnii), also known as spiny anteaters.  The Aboriginals are most famous for their "dot paintings" and didgeridoo playing.  Aboriginal art is one of the oldest art forms in the world.

Some creatures are deadly to the touch, can kill you upon ingestion, or can grab you out of nowhere, and without any warning, for you to never be seen again.  These things do happen; they are not just what movies are made of, but they happen infrequently.  Let us take the creatures of Australia as an example of some of the natural dangers in the world today.

Here are just six of the deadliest creatures living today in Australia, the box jellyfish, the taipan snake, the salt-water crocodile, the blue ring octopus, the stonefish (possibly the most deadliest fish in the world), and the red back spider.

Australia has about twenty of the top most venomous snakes in the world.  The amount of poisonous spiders ranks pretty high as well, but with the invention of antivenin, people no longer die from these bites if treated right away.  Even the platypus has a barb above it’s rear feet, used by the male during mating season to fight off other males.

Now back to the sea and it’s magnificent ways of enticing humans to enter it.  We look at the crystal blue calm waters off of Australia’s beaches and the desire to take a swim overwhelms us.  But if these waters have no large reefs present, then the currents can be deadly to swimmers. Powerful rip currents, rip tides and shore breaks can quickly bring you out to deeper waters, or create panic in a swimmer when fighting against them.  Now what if it is box jellyfish mating season? The Australian Box Jellyfish, scientifically known as the Chironex fleckeri, and ranked among the most venomous creatures in the world.

Shark attacks on the rise in areas that used to be safe to swim, why this occurrence?  This is due to the break down of the marine ecosystem that used to provide food for these creatures.  So they follow the food closer to the shores.

But a visit to Australia is a must, for with proper precautions; you can see the greatness and beauty of this infamous Island without so much as a scratch.  Box jellyfish season is Oct. thru April, where they move to calm waters for feeding.  Crocodiles do not like to hang with humans, stay out of the mangroves.  Most creatures, unless provoked, will avoid you.  As far as sharks are concerned, follow some basic rules, do not swim at night, while you are bleeding, do not feed any animal, and follow all warning signs posted.

Having fun with sealife

I had a dream this morning that I was on a beach, and if you put your hand in the sand of shallow water, a baby octopus will be in your grasp and pulling away. It was awesome. Yes, I am a little infatuated with the creatures. They are incredibly smart, so squishy and come in such wonderful, changeable colors. I also have quite the fondness for cuttlefish, in case you don't know me. The eyes are just amazing, the pulsating light show moving down their legs, which they perform when inspired, is all so magical. I met a woman recently who thought the sea dragon was a myth, or perhaps a Disney inspired creature. Wow, if ever someone needs to visit an aquarium...that is all I am going to say on the subject.

Above is my latest creation in seducing the world to look at my art. I hope it works, but now, where to post it? Please feel free to share the wonder of art. Thank you, callie

OK, skateboards were tons of fun to paint, but what about surfboards? Taking on a new shape, simply inspirational. The look and feel of the sea. Would I like to do a real surfboard, totally! If anyone knows of a company with raw, unfinished boards, please let me know.

My dream is to go to Australia in 2014. I am hoping to get gallery representation, if you have a connection and think I would be a good fit, please pass along my site information:
www.CallieArt.com. Thank you!

I feel a strong connection to the land of aboriginal souls. I would love any gallery contact information. I am in need of some serious networking to make this happen. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this dream comes to fruition. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for stopping by. Callie

And now for something completely different...

Enter, the world of skateboarding energy. I got on my first board when I was thirteen, but then fell on my chin and thought that was it. I need all my bones intact.  I refused stitches and still have the scar to remember those days by. Now, thirty-four years later, my passion is back, but in a different fashion. Decks now serve as my canvas. I love the shape, the potential, and the adrenaline just waiting for action.

While traveling in London, I did a photoshoot of a skate park under the Tate Modern. Boys in school uniforms were hanging out with the street skaters.  I was mesmorized by the grafitti, the skaters and the idea of creating boards to evoke the moment of action. Above are two of the resulting boards inspired by this environment.

In late October 1996, Yuko Nii founded the non-profit The WAH Center (Williamsburg Art & Historical Center) based upon her Bridge Concept. That concept envisions a multifaceted, multicultural art center whose mission is to coalesce the diverse artistic community, and create a bridge between local, national and international artists, emerging and established artists, and artists of all disciplines. Thus through the international language of art we come to understand each other to create a more peaceful and integrated world. The WAH Center is a force for peace and understanding and it’s concept is incorporated in its acronym: “WAH” in Japanese means “peace” or “harmony” or “unity.”

Vast (Creature)

My quest for exploration lies within the fantastical universe within our seas.

As a teenager, I had my first scuba diving adventure. My father had a friend who was an underwater photographer. For a week, we lived on a sailboat in the Virgin Islands and dove shipwrecks twice a day. I will never forget how completely taken I was by the variety and vibrancy of life living just beneath the surface.

I became a Rockaway Artist Alliance member before I moved to Brooklyn. I had a friend in Carroll Gardens who really wanted a sticker for her car to be able to park at Fort Tilden without getting a ticket. She brought me to meetings in exchange for this sticker. Fort Tilden offered a very dynamic community rich in art, theatre and gardening. It contained an aura of a place where magical happenings were inspired, and creative souls are celebrated.

Both of my parents were raised in Brooklyn. They were already familiar with the magic the sea offered to the beachcomber. My dad would capture all types of creatures from the ocean and put them in his fish tank for observation. They instilled this love of nature into their four children. That love is very evident in my artwork.

The Wave, Rockaway news

Beach 105 Station Features Callie Hirsch’s Artwork

A new MTA Arts for Transit project, designed by artist Callie Hirsch, was recently installed at the Beach 105 Street station.

Hirsch created fantastical aquatic creatures set against rich blue and green backgrounds of water.

She worked with the glass fabricator Erskin Mitchell, who interpreted her artwork into three groupings of faceted glass panels. Each is a striking portrayal of organic ocean forms made radiant by the strong light that reflects off the nearby ocean.

Hirsch, inspired by childhood experiences, explores the universe beneath the seas through her artwork. As a child, she was fascinated by the family fish tank filled with creatures taken from the ocean.

As a teenager, her interest was heightened when she began sailing and scuba diving. The variety and vibrancy of life beneath the surface continues to be a major interest to her.

With a love for the Rockaway landscape, Hirsch says the ocean is one of the most desirable places on earth. Through “Vast,” she hopes to “encourage viewers to acknowledge and respect the beauty of the sea as well as consider their own participation in the power and wholeness of the natural world.”

Solo Show titled "Nature's Pulse" at Suffern Free Library

Nature's Pulse, artwork by artist Callie Danae Hirsch,
On display at the Suffern Free Library, Feb. 5th thru Feb. 29th, 2012. Open to all!

Energy vibration, the life force of our universe, serves as the inspiration for the series of work presented by Callie Danae Hirsch. Curated for children and adults alike, Ms. Hirsch’s show is a compilation of pieces painted on traditional surfaces as well as an electric guitar (in collaboration with guitar maker, Brian Slyman), and two skateboards. In addition Ms. Hirsch showcases photographs of the MTA Commissioned work, VAST to be installed on the 105th Street A/S train platform in Rockaway Beach. Ms. Hirsch illustrates the pulsating rhythm, energy as a life force, and artistic possibilities in everyday objects.

Each painting demonstrates an attempt to resolve the conflict between personal identity as a living body and its place in the natural world. This discussion is shown through seductive patterns and flowing streams of energy represented by dots through the plains of the painted surface, which make the depth of movement magical. The natural world is visually alive in Ms. Hirsch’s work with all the twists and turns in which it travels. The patterning of dots represents this movement of natural energy and is threaded throughout the work.

“The paintings here are a glimpse into one person's process; finding conflict or resolution by creating forms inseparable from anthropological, spiritual and natural forces . . . cycling one's past into the present and back into a common past.” P. Lie, Designer

School Of Art, Media, And Technology

“I look to make art more accessible and enjoyable, so that it becomes an everyday experience for people,” says Callie Danae Hirsch.

Hirsch’s work Vast was recently installed in New York’s Rockaway Beach subway station as part of the MTA Permanent Arts for Transit Program, allowing thousands of commuters in the Rockaways to encounter her art daily. Her mural, consisting of 15 faceted-glass panels mounted on an outdoor platform, superimposes a translucent seascape over the view of the Atlantic Ocean. “I want viewers to consider and embrace their own connection to the natural world,” Hirsch explains.

Hirsch enjoys having her art seen outside the confines of an art gallery, although she has frequently exhibited in New York City and was invited to show at the Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea in Florence in 2001. Hirsch’s designs appeared on packaging for the popular Sweetriot candies, and her paintings were recently purchased by Hotel 718 in Brooklyn.
